Amnesia Sounds So Inviting

They should sell sadness
Like sidewalk salesman
Rather than hustlers
Looking for a penny
But all I have for them is pity
And for the officers
On the street corner
Talking amongst each other
Basking in their love
For the hierarchy
Maybe tonight I’ll rebel
And become their king
Wearing bruises like eye shadow
In a city so desperate for sleep
It’s like a sickness
The type that tickles my gag-reflex
Like the aspiring actress
In her first low-budget film
“If daddy used to touch me there,
then why can’t everyone else?”
Because we like call ourselves stars
Rather than lay with our backs to the ground
on a clear night
Like the lovers we ought to be
And never again wake in a sweat
From this so-called “American dream”
