I Salute You

He gave his toy to his friend
A smile grew while watching in delight
The happiness from this gesture but a small thing
Giving he was the only way he knew.
Children fighting in the school yard
He comes running thinking its his job
To save those he cared for most
Protective he was for you and me.
A girl cries on the brink of death
Hugging her until her last breathe
A disease had made this mess
Comforting was the only way he knew best.
Laying on a bunk in deserts of death
His mission is to free the oppressed
Kindness, protecting, comforting, and giving
A medic he would soon become.
As he lay dying from evils around
The air is silenced, still from what wasn't right
He walked among the dead to lend a helping hand
Only to realize that his job was done.
To the child, the friend and girl
He was there when you needed him most
Salute the man who gave his life
So we all could sleep in peace at night.
