Once She Lived

Contributed by Eve on Saturday, 5th March 2005 @ 08:04:03 PM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

Once she wondered what it was to be
On that other side of tomorrow since that's what it's for
- But not necessarily Australia; she was sure -
And quietly, she began to fade out of today.

Presently she pushed a little further.

Once she dared to look at the sunshine
Trying to find the beauty in the sun, so overly dignified
- She never had understood why it was glorified -
And silently, she retreated to the softer nighttime.

Steadily she steeled her courage.

Once she smiled at a stranger
Hoping for a friendly wave, however small
- She registered the gesture and felt her smile fall -
And mutely, she let her clear eyes turn jaded.

Slowly she came to understand how different people were.

Once she ran out into a thunderstorm
Just to feel the battering of the wind
- She couldn't hear the crack of lightning just before she was pinned -
And numbly, she put up shutters for her damaged soul.

Gradually she learned to endure.

Once she trusted a close someone
With the tiniest piece of her rapidly darkening heart
- It had been a while since she'd wondered; then she watched it break apart -
And wordlessly, she taught herself how to sew it all back.

Deliberately she trained herself to smile anyway.

Once she ventured to tell outright lies
Telling herself spiderwebs are always swept out easily
- She let herself forget how sticky they often tend to be -
And thoughtlessly, she abandoned her ideal of truth.

Calmly she bade her innocence farewell.

Thats the problem with us (as humans) we are the only people capable of hating eachother and ourselves.
Good write moving.

ahh lose of emotional innocence. there are alot of bad things out in the world. but thats 1 of the worse. i like the way the poem kinda builds to this, i dunno how, but i feel it reflects real life, when u suddenly realise the innocent attitude to the world is gone...
