Insignificance

Contributed by Eve on Saturday, 5th March 2005 @ 12:19:07 AM in AEST
Topic: ambiguous

It's the subtle things
That bring us to our knees.
Those underlying tendencies that destroy society.

It's not the big picture that has us reeling;
No, it's the details.
The people in this world
Cannot be represented by numbers.
Do you think it even possible that you,
With all of your ideas,
your friends,
your troubles,
your follies
and your victories...

That you, as a person,
Are in the long run represented by a number?

The fall is that
We are.

We're just numbers,
And to the galaxy -
All the galaxies -
The universe...
We are little more than dust.

Which, yes, I'm sure you've heard before.
Makes you feel insignificant,
Doesn't it?

But how much do we regard dust?
It's just there, isn't it?
There and always in the way,
barely large enough to make you
Want to avoid breathing it in

But small enough that we pay it little more attention than irritation.

And yet we are so selfish,
Drowning ourselves in our own ideals
And fighting against our own world,
When it's so much bigger out there.

It's hard to keep the thought that this isn't it
(Unless it is
Is it?)
Present in the mind.

And I can still say what I will about this
But the very moment I stop typing

I think about where I'm sitting and that I need more tea.

"We are little more than dust."

Every man and woman is a star, not a speck. Where I am a star, I must not be so insignificant, and where I would shine, I must illuminate.

As long as you've got a breath in your body i'll read every word you write.

I have to agree with your philosophy here, as i've found myself feeling that way many a time. Of course, i've never been able to express it quite like this.

Keep writing or George Michael is coming to your house,
