From my window I can see the gallows you built long ago.
I have wandered aimlessly in my mind because I stopped looking for a reason.
How could a man slice through my heart with such precision,
yet, swear he was unaware?
The pain was so sharp at times the tears clouded my vision.
How could you not see?
Now I stare out my window, longing to be free. To be me.
But I have obligations you say.
Responsibilities too.
Duties yet to be fulfilled and agreements to follow through.
What did you give up? What have you lost?
What did I ever take from you?
I dared not approach. I knew I'd hang.
I watched my bits and pieces fall off and could not stop to pick them up,
let alone, lament their loss.
Always my eyes were on the gallows and my mind on the rope you furnished.
I was unable to reason.
Unable to negotiate.
Unable to plead my case.
Had I known of the sorrow, heartache and loss to come,
I'd have hung myself.

this reminds me of my older poems, but this one was written better than most of my rambling diary entry type poems. one thing i found odd about this poem is i guess it is better to not have known. my motto is usually that ignorance is a killer, and that still applies here. i loved your piece. whats done is done, and determines what to be done. |
