There Were Roses

Contributed by kkoala1957 on Monday, 28th February 2005 @ 07:56:22 PM in AEST
Topic: Grief

There Were Roses

There were Roses at the roadside
Where another victim fell
The victim of a Drunken sot
Who should drive right into Hell

There were Roses at the alter
When they placed the coffin down
Prayer were read laments were said
By the living for the dead

There were Roses at the Graveside
Where this latest victim lay
Her life ended so tragically
On that gorgeous summer day

There are Roses all around us
Now one won’t see another day
Do we just ignore it?
In the hope ‘twill go away

There are Roses in our lives
Protect them while you can
Or you’ll attend a funeral
Caused by another drunken man

great write... it is really sad that people just look at the flowers on the side of the road and brush it off... back when i was seven i had a friend who lived down state from me who died because of a drunk driver... his mother and him were coming home from the store one night and hit head on with a drunk driver, the drunk driver and my friend nate died and his mother made it through after a long hospital stay so I can relate... and you definently told the story well enough of how no one really cares nor understands the roses on the side of the road because there are still people out there driving drunk

welcome to YPDC, here you are always a friend and a family member, so do enjoy yourself.

This it truly sad, for it does happen every day and some times it even hits home and that is when we feel it the most. Just take heart in knowing that life will go on, don't dwell on these things for it will turn you bitter and change who you are, just be strong and God bless.

This was a good poem it was written with heart felt emotion and told truthfully what does happen every day. I am sorry for the pain that you must have gone through, just know that it will pass although it will never leave, use it, and know that it becomes a part of you. the flow of this poem was steady and never broke from its rythm, do keep it up, I do hope to read more of your work soon,. take care.

Hi heartquake...I would agree on that point. About 400 yards from where I live, taped to iron railings there are flowers there every year at the same time just before Christmas. It wasn't the drunk driver that hit the child it was the police car chasing the drunk driver. End result is exactly the same.

Their can never be an excuse good enough to get into a car to drive it after you have been drinking. In my opinion the law is way to lax by far against these people although now, especially here in England they are coming down harder on them than they have done.

Thanks for your response. Makes writing it all the more worth while.

i completely agree with the message. this is a very impressive piece. yet, i have to tell you, people hardly ever learn, and that is one reason why people are still stupid. seems like stupidity kills more people these days than the AIDs virus. the problem isnt the fact that it happens everyday, its the fact that it happens at all.

Powerful.

I don't know how else to describe the way I felt upon reading this.

Very well expressed.
