Hark! Gather ‘round and hear
A tale of monsters, love and fear
About a maiden, golden and fair
Who met a knight in the town square
Smitten was she at first sight
Who couldn’t fall for this handsome knight?
He looked her way but saw past the maiden
And for her a new life would begin
She lost herself, grew thin and pale
When asked to do a chore she would fail
That stranger would haunt her in her dreams
Neighbors awoke to the sound of screams
She learned he was leaving to be on his way
In one fortnight—only fourteen days!
She had to hurry and make him realize
That he was in for a surprise
She sat round a fire, like you are right now
Listened to a story of why and how
A monster lurked in the dark, empty forest
And no one dared to go and kill it
The monster, it is said, was 10 feet tall
With large silver scales, I do recall
Long, pointed claws, sharper than knives
Maybe slaying the monster would prove she’s alive!
So this girl trained to fight, smiling and proud
Of the deed she would soon do for the town
The knight would then love her, soon they’d be wed
And she’s never go back to her old life again
The possibility of failure did not cross her mind
And she stepped in the forest, only to find
Shadow and noises, foreign and unknown
A quick glimpse of fear; she wanted to go home
But she could not fail the town cheering her on
Though they half-expected her to forever be gone
She closed her eyes and took three more steps
And that’s when the monster gave her a threat
Growling so high, she had to cover her ears
But, she told herself, have no fear
She saw his scales, gleaming in the shadows
And all she wanted was to see tomorrow
She climbed up a tree with new bravery
The monster was distracted; he didn’t see
She jumped on his neck, pulling out her sword
Trying not to notice all the blood and gore
But he wasn’t dead yet, it wasn’t that easy
He slashed her with his claws, bringing her to her knees
She gasped with pain, blinded by blood
And thought all she had worked for was now done
But wait, what was that? The monster was unsure
The knight, once again, came in the picture
With armor shining as bright as the scales
The maiden and her love would never fail
The deed was soon done, the left hand in hand
The forest’s dark and desolate land
And though she was battered, bloodied and bruised
He kissed her cheek softly, and she was renewed
The crowd cheered for their win and the girl’s glowing face
She knew in her heart that her knight’s love was safe
She’d risked her life, and so had he
And happily ever after they were destined to be
