In carriage Senor Segundo did sleep,
and they found hombre deeply snoring great.
Man occupied back seat in a big heap,
enjoying a siesta during wait.
"Here he is! Look at him. He sleeps while we look for him. Hey Hombre! Wake up.
It's time for you to think about getting up."
Huerra put a gentle hand on El Segundo's shoulder shaking him a little. Segundo
opened his eyes. He looked into the face of his patron. He tried to focus his eyes.
It took time. He'd drunk too much tequila juice.
"We're back, amigo. Do you want to sleep your life away?"
Diego Silva, more awake, focused his eyes. With a yawn and a stretch he said,
"Such a good sleep. Someday I'll always sleep like that."
"Not for a long time, Segundo. It's time for us to take Alcalde home."
"Maybe the man is drunk," Captain Thompson ventured a guess.
Huerra kicked the empty agave bottle out of the way. He shot a cold look
at the Yanqui captain. " No senor, he said with an edge to his voice. "Segundo's
not drunk. A single bottle's only a good companion on a rainy afternoon. He's been
asleep." Captain Thompson looked doubtful. Don Hernandez spoke indifferently
to the matter. "Drunk or not, captain, he's taken good care of the horses and carriage.
This is a good place for them."

I'm glad you like my poem. Things of early California interest me a lot.
