A mute and sounding thunder

A thousand pages I have writ thy face upon,
A thousand more and still thy form eludes me.
I write:
Upon thy slender lips cast thy finest flower,
and thy flower upon thy kiss is wry and sour;
Still, thy frame is lost to me, the lock of feather
in thy hair, thine eyes thine own sky
thy sun a distant heather.
To complete thee, thy skin the honey of the moon,
thy hair the autumn harvest waiting for the snow,
I cannot know thine eyes downcast, thy laughter
fell asunder, I cannot know thy dreams, thy dreams
a mute and sounding thunder.
