Street Child

Contributed by Sandy on Thursday, 12th December 2002 @ 11:00:00 AM in AEST
Topic: EmotionalPoetry

Please God answer me some questions.

Why was I born into the world of grey streets
of dirt and crime
to sleep in doorways with no warmth of a blanket
only boxes of cardboard.

Looking for scraps to eat from dirt bins
What is it like to have a full belly
to drink clean water from a cup
maybe someone will be kind to me today.

The sun is shining
will hold our my hands at the traffic lights
Hear voices of contempt
does not matter anymore.

Why did you let me be born from my mother
what lesson is there for me to learn from this life
I am alone and poor
with no one but myself.

The pigeons and squirrels
are the companions that I have
I save the crumbs for my friends
I know what it is like to be hungry.

God did you not teach my mother to love
Did you not show her how to provide warmth
Why did you not show her the way
that you know how.

I will live perhaps a few more years
I think maybe I am nine years old
I welcome going to sleep
and waking up within your safe haven.

Let me have wings God
To fly to the warm light
Let it be soon God
cause I am so cold.
