The Affair
They sat smoking cigarettes in
the backseat of a rusty Rover
in a car park outside a pub,
after having made hasty love.
She was stroking his hair and
he felt trapped and repulsed
by this sordid affair, she was
married to his best friend and
he didn’t know how to get out
of this relationship that after sex
brought him nothing but shame.
Abruptly he pulled away from
her opened the car door jumped
out and said: “Come let’s have
a drink, she meekly followed
but her eyes had puzzled and
hurt look; and so ended another
evening for the miserable lovers.
