The Sailor
He set sail from the days of the old,
Away from the lies, away from the cold
And when the storm came on the open sea,
He fought against the ocean blue,
Dauntless and young, he yearned to be,
Away from the old and joined with the new.
But when the ocean landed her final blow,
He fell from his ship into the sea,
His fate, his future, he could hardly know,
Save his last conscious thought, “To be free”.
The island breeze awakes his beaten form,
The chaos abated, the sky is clear,
His ship lay in ruins,
But he has weathered the storm.
He stands before a sea now calm,
Dwarfed by cliffs on either side.
“Where to go, which way to turn!”
He shouts aloud into the sky.
Atop a cliff there stands a tree,
Adorned with fruit, the man can see,
Sprouting from the Earth so green,
There stands a lone, solitary tree.
An up the cliff there lays a path,
Easily traveled by man’s two feet.
That leads to the patch of green grass,
And to the single, beautiful tree.
And the other lay enshrouded with a mist,
From which a beautiful voice was heard.
That, unseen, beckoned him to scale the cliff,
And join her in paradise forever more.
But wary he was to climb this side,
For reaching into the now blue sky,
Stood a wall of thorns, so as to keep,
Man from traversing with his own two feet.
“To reach”, he thought, “for a voice so pure,
Despite the fact that I’m not entirely sure,
If, above, there’s a woman at all,
Whispering my name, bidding I heed the call.
Is it merely my mind calling my name,
My emotions running, ramped and untamed?
Or is she there, for I cannot see,
If it is her that now calls me?”
He turns his gaze to the first of two,
No whisper he hears atop the cliff.
Yet he sees the fruit, shiny and new,
And he thinks again, his mind adrift,
“I see this beautiful, fruitful tree,
And though no audible whisper it sends to me,
Surely no man could disagree,
How sweet and real that fruit appears to be.
I can see it, smell it, hear it, own it,
I can hold it, feel it, taste it, be shown it.
And though cursed it is to die someday,
Fall to the ground and rot away,
I could taste its essence in every way,
For now is forever, now is today!”
Two just goals call his name,
Both he cannot have at once.
So in between he shall stay,
And make his decision another day.

This is great! Good flow, great imagery, and (unlike many poems) it has a point. Well done! |

I'm continuously impressed as I trek through your file. You show great ability in streaming-thought-to-word, that isn't blocked or waylaid by a lack of vocabulary, or of imagination.
Another enjoyable and absorbing read. |

If it wasn't for the sea and the shipwreck I would have thought it was the story of Adam and Eve. Congratulations for a very impressive piece. Full marks for being different.
