The Dark Path

Fetid darkness blankets my path,
rendering sight useless.
I walk slowly, cautiously,
my short, faltering steps leading me ever onwards
towards a future I do not know or care to understand.
Wind, thin as a whisper, swirls around me,
bringing with it a biting cold that chills me to my bones.
I draw my cloak closer, it’s velvet skin shielding me,
protecting me from the elements.
The wet, watery ground sinks to accommodate
feet that have grown numb from trudging.
I shudder, spasms racking my body
as pain invades my perceptions
as would an unwanted guest, denying me rest.
The air grows colder,
rendering my garments useless to me.
I fall to my knees, breath beginning to leave my lungs,
as I try desperately to keep hold of life.
Feeling begins to drift away,
leaving me newborn on the dark path.
I let the void take me,
sinking into the warm embrace of nothingness.
