Turn
Turn and listen
To the sound of her breath; shallow
Eyes bright and vibrant
Secrets of the young girl
Behind them
Laughter has never escaped her memory
The large quilt torn covers her
Colors faded together
Red, yellow, green, blue
Years of love and pain embedded in the seams
Softly I brush hair from her face
Once wild and red
Spiral curls lusciously long
Tickled the small of her back
Now, it’s thin, matted and gray
The color of cigarette ashes
What is left?
Repetitive memories
People are pictures in a fading mind
She reaches out to me
Hand withered, bruised
Skin that has softened and sagged
Bright blue lines
Hinted underneath the skin
Showing that
Her life still flows
Today it is a red sweater;
Purple sweats
Too big
Swallowing her tiny body,
Becoming a child
Eyes unknowingly aware
Darting, looking around
What does she see?
Pretty images
Harsh truth
I walk away.

I thought this was a very well done piece, and it made me cry a little as I read it. Nicely done. |
