The Little Girl Down the Lane*

Contributed by Glo on Friday, 4th February 2005 @ 12:47:11 PM in AEST
Topic: ChildrensPoetry

There was a young girl that lived down the lane,
Didn't have the fanciest clothes...
In fact she looked very plain.
But there was something special about her.
Most other children failed to see,
She had a heart of compassion...
Giving her last to those in need.

One of the well to do children asked her...
How could you give what little you have away?
Why not save them for a rainy day?
Her reply...I've seen lots of sunny days,
Also days also filled with rain...
I'll give away my everything,
To ease another childs pain.

To see that little girl smile surely brings me joy,
Or helping the little boy retrieve his kite from the tree.
Knowing it was his favorite toy.
People make fun of me because of what I don't have,
But when I see how some children end up...
It makes me very glad.
I appreciate what I do have, it may not seem like much,
My Parents give me what's needed...
Not all that expensive stuff.

If that's all that matters to you and your friends...
For me I'll remain that Girl down at the end,
Of the lane where hardly any kids comes to play,
The Lane that brings you and others so much shame.
Only because of not having all the finery,
Even to this day I'm still proud of her...
Because that Little Girl who lived down the Lane... is Me!

I know her so well!
