in the numbers, in the suits, in the colors

twilight hits the window
and suddenly i jerk awake
this is my first time on a train
and all i can think about is a train crash in tanzania in 2002
i guess i’m pretty stupid for worrying about that
everyone else seems fine;
they sleep normal hours.
i figure i’m the only one awake now,
and it will be that way for a few hours.
i could try to get more sleep,
but its no use.
once i’m awake,
i stay awake.
i reach into my pocket for a deck of cards
and i lay down hand after hand
looking for correlation…in the numbers, in the suits, in the colors.
one of these days, i expect to draw five aces. (impossible, i know.)
i’m looking for any sign i may be gifted.
(i always wanted to be gifted at something)
just as i’m finally getting into the swing of the cards,
a loud jolt shakes the train car.
everyone is awake…
a wheel has derailed, and we are gliding sideways along the track
held down by nothing but our collective hopes of survival.
there were screaming fits.
there were crying fits.
i think i even heard fits of laughter.
the end of the world will make some men go crazy.
and this was the end of the world…for 290 passengers…
including myself.
and right before the car collided with the side of a cliff,
it hit me.
i am gifted at something…
i am gifted in picking the one train route that goes down in flames.
