Dodging Bullets

Walking down my tunnel,
I see the dim mist that fills my life.
The light at the end is not especially bright;
just the same as everything else around me.
Every time I blink, a drop of water falls from
my eye to the ground. The mist is that thick.
All around my head, I can hear the zinging
and whirring of some one or another pointless thing.
Sometimes the things sound like a freight train—
so loud that I can’t hear myself scream.
Sometimes, the things sound like nothing more
than a single bee, and their sound is drowned out
by the echoes of the water from my eyes hitting
the foamy ground, and the sounds of my feet sloshing
through the large, uniform puddle in which they are bound.
With every step I take, I shed my skin, and everything
behind me melts into blackness — the bees, the screaming,
the freight trains — everything.
With every step I take, the wall of blackness confines
the light into an ever-shrinking space, thus
the light is slowly but surely made brighter and brighter.
Eventually, however; the light will become so bright that
I will be unable to blink, unable to hear the drip-dropping water,
and unable to live with the overwhelming raw emotion present.
When that happens, I will be at the end of my tunnel,
and I will be happy.
After all, I can’t go on dodging bullets forever.
