Precipitation Perspectives

It was raining that August,
We said goodbye,
I stood in the deluge and stared mournfully up,
Into the raging sky.
Innocence for freedom,
A fair trade off.
Time passed and often it rained,
I’d get caught and think morbid thoughts,
Staring into the grey debris overhead,
Symbolic thunder in cacophony,
The elements, an active support group,
As I struggled through my malaise.
Sometimes the downpour awakened my spirit,
I’d run through the tempest unbowed,
It’s fury matched by my own,
A clash, a battle, a futile stand,
An invincible foe,
Eventually I’d stagger home defeated and drenched.
Today I got caught in the rain,
I was wearing a t-shirt,
I stood in the deluge and looked mournfully up,
Into the raging sky.
“Why didn’t I bring a *****, rain coat?”,
I walked home disgusted and drenched.
Innocence for freedom,
A fair trade off, after all.
