The Ghost of Regret

Contributed by TheForgottenMelody on Wednesday, 26th January 2005 @ 11:41:26 PM in AEST
Topic: SadPoetry

It’s a trial for me to stand
I had many half-hearted plans
Sitting comfortably in the creases of my mind

I wrote them down on my left arm
Knowing ink wouldn’t cause my flesh harm
But my natural sweat had made the notes hard to find

I forgot them in the nick of time
It was as if God wrote a sign
That read: “Don’t waste your words writing to ghosts.”

This spirit lived on the outside
In a truck used for hayrides
It lost me much farther and faster than most

On the day the notes left my head
I spent hours trapped in bed
Watching out the window for a misty shape in the rain

In the evening, I ate dinner
Didn’t plan to be thinner
For a phantom truck-rider into causing pain

Oh I say that I’ll move on
And I’ll bid the dead so long
Their time-frozen imprints mean nothing to me

But the truth is much harder
Like when sons forgive fathers
The past is a chain without a key to set you free
