A Car Ride

Topic: LovePoetry

So here we are again
in the backseat of your older brother's car.
He and his girlfriend are in the front

but that's okay - the backseat is more comfortable,
and as long as our mothers can't see us not wearing our seatbelts
everything will be fine.

A song just started on the radio.
I think its an 80's hit, probably some one hit wonder
because I can't tell who they are for the life of me -
and neither can the radio announcer man I bet, since he hasn't told us.

The world is whizzing by at 45 mph.
But who's noticing?
You are not going anywhere
and that's all that matters,

Every once in a while you will kiss my soft hair you like so much
and I will look up into your eyes, trying to read the secrets
and we will kiss.

And just as the song is getting its loudest
I'll whisper in your ear how much I love you
and you will whisper back you love me more
and though I disagree.
I don’t say anything

as I slip my head back to that spot
on your chest where it fits perfectly.
I can feel the smooth coolness of one of the buttons
pressing against my cheek.
As you arms circle around me,
telling the world we belong to each other,
in case it hadn't already guessed

we will both slip back into that spot
somewhere near the bottom of the brain
where there is a realm of thought
only accessible when riding in cars.

And as the song is finally slowing to a stop,
I won’t ask you what you are thinking.
