Through the City

We drove through city, through snow and though sleet
Speeding faster and faster, we had a deadline to meet
We knew it was dangerous, we knew it was wrong
But if we’d gone slower, it would have taken too long
Without even looking, we drove through the red light,
We were too worried to care, it was almost midnight

We gawked in anticipation as our car sped ahead
There were eight of us in total, the Jeep in front of us lead
I looked out my window, watching everything go by
We were all thinking the same, but none of us would cry
We would do anything to make it across town in time
That includes driving through this muck and grime

Our friends in the other car made a sharp right
We swerved and we lost them, they were out of sight
Our Jetta continued to spin round and round
Until we hit a ditch and stopped, our car was snowbound
For the very first time I thought I would weep
Until we heared a horn, “beep, beep, beep!”

We jumped out of the Jetta and hiked up the hill
Our friends had come back for us and were sitting there still
All of us crammed into their Jeep without word
The tires spinning as we lept forward was the only thing heard
Our car problems had stalled us and we were going to be late
We just wanted to get there, not one of us could wait

The Jeep reached one-ninety, the fastest it would go
But sitting there waiting made it feel so slow
We were starting to get close and the tension grew
What would we find when arrived? None of us knew
I sat squished in the middle, trying not to think
But whenever I saw the time, my heart began to sink

The tires rolled up the driveway, with a quick jolt they stopped
Trying to get out we fought, jumped and dropped
My mom came down the stairs and she opened the door
We rushed in the house, completely drenching the floor
I stopped in my tracks and no matter what anyone said
I knew it was over, my goldfish was dead
