Golden Grey

Contributed by jonteD on Wednesday, 26th January 2005 @ 06:33:59 AM in AEST
Topic: FamilyPoems

In the days of black and white,
Life was grey and a fight,
Hand to mouth, day to day,
Living on me Dad's meagre pay.

We didn’t know what was butter,
Didn’t argue or even mutter,
If Mum said go to bed,
Off you went or clipped on head.

From time to time a suit at the door,
Gave him money but he wanted more,
Tried to push his way into the hall,
Until our dog bit away half his balls.

We were scruffy and we were poor,
The sort of family charities adore,
But we lacked for nothing in terms of love,
What we had we thanked Dad and God above.

We had no family holiday to the coast,
Nor odour from kitchen of Sunday roast,
No car, no plush sofa to sit beneath,
In our family luxury was having set of teeth.

Looking back at those golden grey days,
My life has changed in so many ways,
And for what I now have I am very glad,
So thank you Mum, and thank you Dad.
