A Basketball Beach

Sitting on the sidelines--Or is it the shore?
Relaxed with a friend--Just what I've longed for
The players move round to a slow hip hop beat
Sliding like waves and they sweat from the heat
And the balls in the air make an arc coming down
Resembling fish jumping up, swimming round
When one team scores a point, makes a basket with ease
You can hear the net swoosh like a warm ocean breeze
Our hardwood beach sand just needs seashells and snails
We'll swap sneakers for sandals and make castles with pails
And just like the beach I wish this wouldn't end
Simply us sitting here being nothing but friends
Now, you see, at the beach I don't know how to swim
And I know that the dawn of our friendship is dim
One guy takes a long shot, I feel just like him
Like shooting despite the distance to the rim
See, 'cause I feel the need to go out on this limb
To hold onto this friendship that's based on a whim

I've never heard of such a comparison before. That was really interesting, Chelsea. The next time I watch a basketball game, I'll be thinking of the beach, then thinking of you and your wonderful gift of poetry. But, I did like how you weaved friendship into the poem. Gave it a nice touch. Beautiful Chelsea. Keep writing. (and write me!!!!)
