What Have We Become?

What Have We Become?
By Jim Hellekson

I love you, I hate you, I want to set you free. My wishes fall on deaf ears, for you refuse to open your eyes, and into the light see.
Are you so blind as to not see your own pain? Has this poison stricken you? Defeated life? Erased all emotion from your brain?
You learned to hide your heart well, but deep inside a rebellion swells. Feeling you cannot let go nor can you keep, and a dagger of pain, whose blade pierces far more than skin deep.
Those demons who rip and tear and forever torment a mind once so fair. Creatures of the mind, the spawn of your own, imps of darkness who refuse happiness to ever be known.
This is what happens when man grows wise. Emotion stifled, feelings chained, beliefs encumbered, and the light abstained.
When money and muscle carry more weight than the beliefs of a man, or the heart of a saint.
When this shallow pond grows ever more stale, and deep inside a young child’s heart begins to fail.
When love and joy are subject to change, to the whims of man, to the outcome of a game.
When depth is shunned and belief is lost, when the light grows dim and love is coated by frost.
These are the things I fear. They live all around, but no body seems to care when a young man they beat down.
These thugs that come in the night, who poison minds, and are always good for a fright.
Gangs we have created from our own shallow cares, tools of injustice, monsters hiding in their lairs.
These are the things that haunt my dreams, monsters and muggers whose presence is never acknowledged but always seen.
Maybe I’m a dinosaur or maybe they really don’t care. But is it that much to ask that this pond grow a little deeper, and for a moment ease this modern despair?
I’ll continue to fight and continue to grow, and maybe someday they will know.
Of the light I see, of those waters ever so clear, feeling and emotions remember, and dreams once again free of fear.
