The world outside is cold
Even when the sun shines brightly
Everyone she used to know is cold
She stares out her window and hugs herself tightly
As long as she stays inside
Nothing will harm her
Nothing will scar her
As long as she keeps away from light
She is safe, this is her sanctuary
Fighting against the time
Trying to hold the seconds in her hand
But she’s just wasting time
Becoming non-existent, she can’t understand
As long as she stays inside
Nothing will harm her
Nothing will scar her
As long as she keeps away from light
She is safe, this is her sanctuary
Too scared of what is beyond the world she knows
She avoided it and became only a shadow
But now her sanctuary is swallowing her whole
A place of safety no more
As long as she stays inside
Nothingness will harm her
Nothingness will scar her
As long as she keeps away from light
She is dying, and this is her sanctuary

Ataraxia ~ a lovely word, and a very nice name.
'Sanctuary' connotes ataraxia, but you turned it into more than a mere 'retreat'. I believe engagement is always better than retreat, but as the girl/woman in this poem knows, its hard to step out into the light of the real world.
Welcome to YPDC, Ataraxia. |
