Germane and Wisdom
He wore his cap with the brim to the side
Twittered the pipe with the embers gone low
Saying nothing but he was everything
Or so that was his thought inside
Climbing his internal ladder of self-esteem
Smiling within at the wealth he had claimed
The swagger in his walk gave way to a limp
But this mattered not as he was Germane
Germane the mayor and Germane the barron
This is what he thought he should be
This be his life and ordained by same hand
But was this by decree or?
It did not matter as he infrequently spoke
Yet when words expunged the gems which they were
And no one informed him contrary be true
His self-styled wit gave rise to sly grin
Of those in the town so few be aware
The costumes he wore in aura of gray
People would follow amazed at the scene
Athletic and Saxon these he was not
No one bothered to ask of his help
Assistance he’d give if but hear the words
Confused to the mind of Germane the aloof
Why when in view and misfortune be near
Was he not called for a helping hand?
He offered not but required request
His life in the silence of self imposed grave
A coffin of vacuum no sound nor reverb
The quizzical quandary was when be alone
One day and a shock to us all
He verbalized to a man at the store
He said have I been here or where are we now
And in soft reply
It is I who have been and you who have not
For all of the space surrounding your walk
Is consumed every day in that of this town
Have you not heard of the park or the lake?
Have you not seen what the sun does in eve?
Or when did you stop to smell of the air?
A fragrance pervades the senses you have
Does taste on your pallet speak of fine wine?
Or do leaves from the garden bring aroma divine?
Hast thou witnessed a bird dance on a tree?
No these have escaped my thoughts in the past
And behold they do so this day
His pipe seems to have died
And his hat blown away
From whence did this man of words come to town?
For no one has seen or heard since that day
Germane now is speaking and carrying on
Some even dared ask of what brought this change
“Oh Mr. Germane may I speak at this time?”
“Yes please do young man and speak of thy mind”
“Have you changed for yourself or power above?”
“Who was that man who brought this transform?”
“Oh him?”
“I no not his name or much more at all
He said I am Wisdom and you are a Germane
I reacted offended and stood quite stern
Yet he spoke in such tones that listen I did”
He said, “what have you done to the you who once was?”
And where are the smiles of youth and its joy?
Are you happy and free or just stoically wrought?
The chalice you hold and the ebb of your mind
Undoing and rigid your mansion complete, or so you say
Yet tis not a mansion but a room within rooms
Within those rooms are parts of you
But you open not the door to the world
Inside the sun does not rise nor does it set
For the windows are curtained and sealed with your will
If but you to turn the lock with your love
The door will swing wide
And the curtains draw back
Air will rush in and the sun gives its rays
So this the occurrence and change of within
“May I speak to my village and compatriots here?”
“May I ask if need help be it body or mind?”
“May I ask if the larder is shy of its full?”
“May I ask to be there if illness be side?”
“May I give of myself in so many ways?”
For the time I have left is not but for me
But my time is to you and all who request
And even those who ask not of me
Shall receive of my love and ask no return
And wisdom the man shall be here ‘gain some day

Beautiful story! I guess some are aloof because they are confident. Some (like myself) do tend to wait to be approached because we have faced a lot of rejection over the years. Anyway, this was so interesting! Blessings. |
