He asked.
Why does the wild black stallion
chase the white mare through the forest?
I don't know I said.
Then he asked
Why does the wild white stallion chase
the black mare through the forest?
I don't know I said.
He said.
Take a wild guess?
I laughed and said you have a wild
imagination-don't you?
You know what else, I said?
He said what?
I said your crazy.
He said no I'm not.
Take a guess?
I said OK I will.
Because the stallions ate some Ginseng?
He laughed and said no.
Because they ate some goat weed.
We both laughed like we were drunk.
Then we were quiet with thought for several minutes.
He said remember the story Gramps use to tell?
Which one I asked?
The one about the naked indian girl.
I said Gramps was drunk to many nights.
No! He said it was true.
Gramps was drunk with dreams.
Here's how the story went.
A naked indian girl.
Gramps used to follow her when he was
stone drunk-staggering.
I said where did she go?
Gramps said a crocodile got her.
Got her? I asked what do you mean?
The crock bit her on the tit.
I said, God will get you for lying.
He said I'm not lying.
She was a ghost right?
Yeah, or that was Gramps Mad-Dog talking.
I asked Mad-Dog?
Yeah you know whiskey.
When Gramps drank Wild-Turkey or
Jim-Beam.
on certain nights
that naked indian girl would
whipped the crock.
Remember the night Gramps died?
Yeah why?
The same night the moon fell
off the palm trees.
It splashed in the swamp
the swamp rippled with the moon
then turned dark.
Then the stars glittered the bats bellies
flying in the moonless sky.
That's when the naked indian girl
Screamed!
I still get goose bumps
Yeah me to.
Why do you think the naked
indian girl screamed?
I said I don't know tell me?
No! I'm not.
Why I asked?
I'm afraid.
Afraid?
Why?
I'm afraid you will like that rot gut whisky.
I laughed and said yeah, and I
see naked indian girls
walking through the forest,
then riding those wild stallions
and she is smoking that goat-weed
If you were a stallion with a naked indian girl
riding on your back, you would run stiff legged to.
I laughed
and said I know your crazy now.
The naked indian girl vanished one night
the night we poured Jim-Beam
all over the ground.
You thought bats darted crazily.
You should have seen them after they flew
down to sip the Jim-Beam
Good thing they have radars.
The rats drank the rest of the whisky
on the ground.
The snakes ate the rats.
They crawled really crooked
with swollen bellies full of rats.
Whisky soaked rats.
Remember when our great great grandma was buried?
No why?
You couldn't you was only two years old.
Anyway, at the grave yard
the funeral guy got real mad
he started cussing.
Why?
He couldn't nail the pine box lid down.
He jumped up-n-down on the coffin
with the loose lid flopping.
cussing and cussing.
I will never forget what he did.
Which grandma was it anyway
Her outlaw name was Bell Star.
Thee Bell Star
Yes, THEE
Bell Star
she used to sit on the front porch
rocking in her rocking chair
smoking her corn cob pipe.
No one really knew who she was
at the grave site.
Bell Star faked her death like Jesse James did.
Grandma was shot off her horse
that's why she had the crippled arm.
Something splashed in the distance.
Its getting cold now.
Put more wood on the fire.
OK give me one more big swallow
of that Jim-Beam you have hidden there.
Did you see that?
See what?
She walked right through the fire.
Who did?
A naked indian girl.
We need to quit drinking all this whisky.
Laughing we drank more whisky.
Then we passed out from the whisky.
we dreamed the same dream.
The naked indian girl was riding
the black stallion into the night.
When the moon arose
she was riding naked
on the white stallion.
She vanished into the rising moon
giving us a bouncing
moon shot.
