Going Home

Contributed by Neil on Friday, 14th January 2005 @ 05:50:44 AM in AEST
Topic: MiscPoems

I really didn’t want to take this trip
So long I’ve been gone from home
A small town didn’t suit me well
I had to get out and roam

Funerals are hard to go through
And I had to go for this one
I’ll get to see some old friends of mine
But I’ll really be glad when it’s done

We left the airport for the long ride home
Down the country roads and beautiful scenery
I’d forgotten how pretty the trees can be
And the fields in all of their greenery

At last we pull on to the cemetery trail
I can see all my friends with tears in their eyes
As we pull up beside the gravesite
I can hear the wails as they cry

The hearse is opened, the casket in view
As my old football buddies step in
To carry me to my resting place
Beside all the rest of my kin

I thought when you died, you left right away
But I could see all of this taking place
I guess the Lord lets you stay for a while
To get one last look at a face

The people cried and hugged one another
Slowly, they left me alone
And, when they were gone, I started to fly
Now, I was really going home.
