Czechoslovakia '78

Contributed by Steeleyes on Thursday, 5th December 2002 @ 01:40:00 AM in AEST
Topic: oops

The church burns with life
and the flames of a thousand candles

Crowded to the doorway, I squeeze in
& feel the power

Outside, the streets are ribbons of mist
Lost smiles miles behind doorways

Along the streets
buildings like fallen tombstones
grey and dark, forbidding
stretch endlessly

Life goes on behind closed doors
Bright life existing in warm living rooms
across the city

And in the parks & squares
so many fountains dance
playful
among closed faces
and the stares of shop staff
grimly guarding empty shelves

Drinking some weak nameless brew
I stand with the helpless others
at tiny table tops perched on pillars
in some café

And up to the castle strong & stark
Through the Jewish quarter
carved in two by the concrete knife
of the proud new motorway

And in the night
Serious silence in the concert hall
Dignified enjoyment of high ideals
A proud nation awake to its culture
Moving ever upward to an aesthetic dream

And a Hostinec pulses into the darkness
about to explode from singing within
Bright gold sounds rebound
on the dark pot-holed road

And the air always is serene
unmuddied by affluence
grey, peaceful, cold, exquisite

ragged edges of life survive
not neatened or trimmed
they sprout rudely everywhere
delighting this alien
tired of a tamed world

Folk dances bright & joyous
with costumes of passionate innocence
revolve incongrous in a venue
of graveyard grey
and mausoleum dimensions

And on the hill in the graveyard
to the fallen dead
towers the statue to the heroes
the rescuers of the nation

The Soviet soldier towers high
over the town
monument of subjection
for a proud nation
now trapped in time
and space

but bright lights
still shine in strong hearts
and creative forces grow unseen
ever ready to melt the iron gates
and open the prison doors...

Thanks for the vision of the country where many of my ancestors came from. Well done. SusieQ
