I remember sitting next to you
under the charcoal skies, thoughts
colliding over what to say and how
to say it, palms getting sweaty.
I remember how sweet you looked
that night, so simple and stunning,
and thinking I don't deserve this
privilege, but what the hell anyway.
I remember finally asking the words,
(god I bet it sounded stupid)
the words that would make or
break the rest of that evening.
I remember you leaning close and
grabbing my now-soaked hands with
your own, whispering the one syllable
that mattered most that moment.
I remember my thoughts fading, like a
dream, everything so surreal as I
stared at you and realized how
lucky I was to have this chance.
I haven't forgotten that feeling,
because I am reminded everyday
when I see you put on that smile
that time still slows down for.
