LANDS OF THE THOUSAND YARD STARE…(©Peter Sprenkeler)
Amid the ruins they sit…in quiet and private agony,
Among thousands of desperate souls yet utterly alone.
Their gaze a chilling and expressionless…sightless confusion,
Their pain so personal…cutting to the very bone.
They gaze in a pathetic and aimless stare of grim resignation,
Thousands of questions swirl…finding the answers to none.
Unable to comprehend…finding no rhyme or reason,
In total confusion…minds and hearts are numb.
All has been taken…they search so deep within,
Why…is the question seeping from every pore?
They survey the wreckage of their shattered lives,
And wonder who…from their bodies their soul has tore.
A haunting sight…so much pain buried so deep within,
There is no medicine…no injection to take the pain away.
Just a constant flood of memories of horror and death,
To what extent uncertain…of the price of survival they must pay.
Bodies that may be quite sound and intact,
Yet carrying deep lacerations that will never heal.
The ‘stare’ is an escape…a place of much needed refuge,
From all and sundry even themselves…the pain they bravely conceal.
And in these regions of devastation they have many companions,
All displaying the grim and vacant stare.
We cannot even begin to imagine…their personal agony,
Intensely private…in their suffering we have not the right to share.
Yet around their hearts we can bring a compassionate arm,
A hug of tenderness…to comfort a bruised and bleeding soul.
A smile of understanding…a gentle stroke on a suffering brow,
Sharing a tear…and help them wrestle with the awesome toll.
Many have no one…nothing on which to cling,
With the ‘stare’…they look blankly to the skies above.
We have rightly leapt to their immediate physical needs,
Now is the time to give our hearts…for their souls need all our love.
