Ever fleeting is that moment
when eyes catch the glimpse
of shadows moving in the night.
Could it be the click of heels
upon the cobblestone at
midnight –
or the distant howl?
Echo the whispers of a thousand
souls floating on the wind as
winter’s crisp grip grabs hold –
a sharp prick that bites deep.
Quicken does the heart as it beats
within the chest and fear oozes
from pores to saturate the air.
Fear not the voices that you hear
but the soft caress of fingers upon
your hair –
and the deep breath before your last sigh.
