Where Does One Begin?

WHERE DOES ONE BEGIN?...(©Peter Sprenkeler)
120,000 dead…mind numbing figures…such a toll,
To even contemplate…where does one begin?
The chaos…the carnage…the hopelessness…the horror,
All of us will pay a price…our very souls mourn deep within.
The sheer scale of this disaster…almost incomprehendable,
No one can claim to fully verbalize and understand.
Millions sit stupefied…dazed…in shock and disbelief,
Why such circumstance…to them delivered by nature’s hand?
Emotional and psychological trauma on a biblical scale,
Where does one begin…for any answers to even vaguely trace.
The waves may have subsided…yet lives hang in the balance,
Disease and starvation…the next threat they all will face.
The buildings and towns will in time be rebuilt,
Yet the same cannot be said of so many innocent lives.
It could be decades before the pain subsides for many,
In the minds of millions…the horror for years will survive.
Where does one begin to grasp reason or sound explanation?
For in reality there is no where to point the finger of blame.
Where does one begin to find some inner peace and comfort?
As so many corpses bloat in the sun without a name.
A ‘natural disaster’…of unparalleled proportion,
Yet man in his magnificent resilience will find a way.
From the depths of horror and hopelessness he will emerge,
He will yet once again…bask in victory over dismay.
Where does one begin?...there is simply no answer,
A horrific event…that somehow we have to learn to face.
And the way that so many differing nations have united to help,
Leaves humanity resplendent…far from its usual disgrace.

| Great poem..I'm trying to find out if some of our members such as Venkat, and ones from Sri Lanka have survived..but so far have been unable to do so..? |
