Heroes

Why must I find the need to
keep picking at this festering
wound you have placed deep
within me!

There are days when I linger
upon such short memories of
you, the light you struck
here in my heart and then
crushed the sun beneath
your feet.

Heroes ...
... and I really thought
they existed.

Then you came along and crushed
my dreams of such bright hopes
regarding love.

What I wouldn't give to have
an opportunity to rip out your
soul with the carelessness of
a toddler picking apart peas
from their dinner.

If only you could feel the pain,
the misery, the hate that grows
within me each and every day.
Then, perhaps you might understand
the loathing which mixes with
lingering love that flows deep
inside me.

So confused am I!

Karma is such a wench and I
truly hope that someone does
you wrong in the same manner
in which you've treated me.

Oh how I hate you and your
false heroic ways! But I
truly do love you and that
side you let glimmer for
that short time of days.

Perhaps this is why I pick
at the lesions left in your
wake. A reminder to how
blind we become when the power
of love takes our souls and
rips them to shreds.

You linger, even still, deep
within mine. How could I have
ever called you friend, or
even whisper those words of love
in my broken dreams.

Heroes ... bah.

Some of us have that nature that can't leave a wound well enough alone to heal. How I wish I could, and I'm sure you do as well. Still, poems like this wouldn't be written, would they? Turning the pain and anger into expressions such as this excellent piece go a long way towards healing.
