Other lives

I once read about a man
Who followed a fish for days
The man's hands bled
As it pulled him along
But he continued on
Though the pain endured
He let his hands bleed
To eat his only meal in days
Could I feel his pain?
Could I live through it?
I often wonder
Am I as strong as they say?
A woman sits in her room
Cold and out of breath
His hands have struck her
Too many times tonight
But she has nowhere to go
That's what they tell her
So she sits alone
With a shawl around her face
Could I feel her pain?
Could I live through it?
I often wonder
Am I as strong as they say?
A family lives under a bridge
A baby at a mother's breast
They've got one layer of clothes
At ten degrees celsius
The children will not see tomorrow
They're blood will turn to ice
The parents will die of grief
Sometime the next evening
Could I feel thier pain?
Could I live through it?
I often wonder
Am I as strong as they say?
Considering the lives of others
I know I am fortunate
To have been given choices
To have been given certain rights
I live a life that some only dream of
I cannot take for granted anything
That is put in front of me
For everything I must be grateful
