The Man
One day as I was walking
Listening to the people talking
And all the faces passing me
I happened upon a man staring
All the people walked, not caring
But I found him to be of interest to me
His skin was the color of decay
Like documents yellowed with age
So leathery was it, he couldn't tan it
His nose was clearly defined
From all the epidermic lines
It seemed to be hewn from granite
His forehead was wrinkled and worn
Wrinkled from looking so forlorn
And destitute and battered
His mouth was thin, barely a bow
It stretched so wide, I wondered how
When he smiled, it didn't shatter
His ears were no longer red with cold
But instead were brown, they looked old
And used to the city's winter weather
His chin was crooked and pockmarked
And in the marks, the skin was dark
His features barely fit together
His arms were covered by a cheap shirt
It was stained by coffee and dirt
It looked to be a forsaken relic
His legs, likewise, they were unseen
By a pair of jeans with holes in the knees
Where they'd been there was no telling
His chest was warmed by a coat
From one of the shelters all about
It was red and gray and white
He held a sign that asked for benevolence
It begged for even the slightest pittance
Yet the cup of change he held was light
But the reasons why I stopped to stare
The reasons for my sudden care
Were the windows to his soul
Brown as brown could ever be
Without a glimmer that I could see
His eyes were almost as dark as coal
I caught his eye and he turned to see
Then I saw again, his eyes looked empty
As if his soul had vacated the property
They lacked the luster of normal eyes
His eyes, they seemed not to be alive
It seemed his soul had lost its liberty
I tore my gaze from his inhuman orbs
And looked in one of the nearby stores
I walked near him and searched my backpack
I found a quarter and threw it into his cup
He looked at me, said nothing and I sped up
I turned the corner and I never looked back
