Boy takes an oath this day at father's knees
to make the revolution's fight his own.
New leader Diego will try to please,
allegiance youth doth make in somber tone.
"I don't want the gachupines to come for you and mama."
"I'll join Morelos, papa. I'll fight in your place."
"You're only eleven now, Diego, but in a few years you'll be a man.
Revolution will take time for they're strong, but you'll join it. Serve
Morelos well as I've served Hidalgo. I want you to take an oath, Diego."
"What is it, papa?"
" Come, put your hand on my thigh swearing to Our Lady of Guadalupe you'll
ever be true to the revolution. Swear you'll serve Morelos all your life and
be willing to die for those who follow him as I've been for Hidalgo."
Tears came to the boy's eyes. He put his left hand on papa's thigh
raising right in allegiance. "I swear, papa."
Depth and breath of that commitment had been a reflection of the boy's
developing character. Diego Silva met Arracho Huerra three years later
at Chilpancingo. Huerra was captain of Diego's company. Since then
they'd ever been together.
