A Lifestyle Lost

Contributed by Willofree on Tuesday, 14th December 2004 @ 07:56:26 PM in AEST
Topic: Lifepoems

The silos dot the prairie land
As they conspicously guard the farmers stand
Tall and erect they jut up into the sky
Shaped like torpedoes aimed at enemies passing by

The missiles are ready to lauch from their firing pad
In defense of those farms not yet gone bad
The targets would seem to be
The banks that extended credit indiscriminately

Full of feed and crops the silos used to be
Now many stand completely empty
While farming on a large scale still survives
The family farm has pretty much met its demise

The number of farmable acres continues to decilne
Ini favor of land being diverted to real estate finds
What a travesty these empty silos signal
From one encampment to the other, no money jingles

Out of ammunition the farmers share
They watch the failure of their family farms to compare
What they had, to what they have now
Many sold everything, even their cows

Forced into surrender in defeat
For with the banks they could no longer compete
Eventually the silos will crumble and fall
No longer able to take care of it all

A whole lifestyle is disappearing before our eyes
The death of the small family farm you could eulogize
As I look out across the rolling land
Not nearly as many silos still stand

I found this so sorrowful to read, and felt the emotion within all words...it is always a tragidy when a family suffers so others can line their pockets...why must people make them selves rich through pain and loss...
A really beautiful write...I wish some would read this so upon angels wings across lands would your message would be spread.
Keep the words flowing keep hope alive.

A very heart tugging write but oh so ture and a cryin shame.
I live in the home I grew up in and marval at the changes in my lifetime and it's as much different as day light is to dark.
My parents grew, cleand, prepared all their harvest and the six girls in my family helped Momn put it up foor Winter. I can survive even if the food stopped that is if I could find seeds that work.
This one tuggs the heartstrings and brings many memories.
Keep writing 'cause the power of thr written word can move mountains.
huggs, smiles,
emy
