Closet Monsters

I open the door,
not quite sure what I should expect.
Blackness.
Then, I close the door
and decide that I should try again.
I open it a second time and still,
I see blackness.
I see blackness and feel disappointment.
Where did I go wrong?
Aha – the magic words.
I close the door yet again
and whisper loudly to myself
“Coomis, lakis, lapis, sapatis.”
Okay, now.
I open the door yet again.
Blackness.
Disappointment.
Confusion.
What should I do now?
I’ve already tried every other closet in the house.
What is left?
The door closes and opens again and again.
Still, darkness.
The shade astounds me.
It should not be there.
This is impossible.
Maybe if I stare down the shadows, they will go away.
I gaze deep into the heart of the closet,
and slowly, I start to decipher the message it sends.
The darkness penetrates my soul
and pierces my shield of naïve morality.
A broken heart follows a broken thought.
I have been lied to.
But then… No.
I know better now.
But then… Where do walruses come from?
