The Disappointment of an Eggplant

What is an eggplant
This Solanum Melongena?
The mysterious lump
With leathery purple skin
Hiding wonders.
But what is the inside
Of this
“Usually smooth ovoid fruit”
Truly like?
Is it hollow?
The echoing of tapping on the skin
Poses this possibility.
Or maybe it is filled with
A strange liquid.
What enigmas are concealed
Beneath the tough, thick, wrinkled
Green hat topping off
This plant?
As the knife hovers over
The lightly scarred skin
My hopes shoot
Through the roof, soaring high.
I pause
And put down the knife
Leaving the mysteries unsolved.
Rather than cutting through
And finding that the
Apparently tough skin
Yields easily to a plastic knife.
And that the mysterious inside
Is nothing more than a
Glorified sponge
Smelling of cucumber
With a few scattered seeds.
I leave the knife
Content to live without
Seeing the inside
And experiencing
The disappointment of an eggplant.

I can certainly relate to thinking there are things that I know now, that I really didn't wish to know. Perhaps if I had lowered my knife ... there would still be a modicum of mystique to them. Nice write ... I like it.
