Deep Blue Eyes
By Jim Hellekson
Onto the pond I walked tonight, winter’s age-old spell cast upon you long ago. There I found something lost, but not forgotten, buried under years of snow.
As I brush away the years, a though appears in my head. Will these memories forgotten long ago be lost, or to me will they reappear instead?
Light’s last breath reveals a world so much like my own. And for just a minute I wish I could step into the blue, and to me let the mystery be known.
That deep blue world of my past, forgotten long ago; once a home to me, now just a memory, a home now only to the snow.
And there I closed my eyes, and imagined that this ice would break; let me fall back into that world so calm, so peaceful, my own destiny let me make.
There I would open my eyes again, as the chill my breath it does take, And all around me the light dances, a ballroom beneath the surface, a dance hall deep below the lake.
Deep below the surface my eyes slowly close again, and my last breaths I do take, this is the end I tell myself, no more pain, no more sorrow, all swallowed by the lake.
And as my eyes open I awaken from my dream, the snow covering my home has returned, the light I cannot redeem.
This is my fate, no longer may I run, that world is lost to time, I must raise my head, look to the east, and face the rising sun.
But I will always remember the deep, a depth that engulfed me that day, and looking back at our time together; in your blue eyes I will remain.
