Tribute to a Stranger
Sometimes I wonder
How you became who you were:
The dead Indians which made you
Believe the world needed fixing
And the demoralising environment
Of 50's LA.
I wonder you didn't give up sooner.
What was the final straw
The icing on the cake
Who gave you the courage
To stand up and say
What no-one else
Could put into words
Or even notice
What made you snap and commit
The immoral act
That made you write Lament
As an account of your disgust
With yourself and the world?
What made you turn to narcotics
When you would have been
The first to criticise anyone else who did
Especially someone with the
Morals you had.
Jim, you failed me
You failed yourself
You knew you were right, and yet
You let society pull you in
And consume your spirit.
You knew you'd failed
And now it was too late.
I know your secret
I know you gave up
Heroin was never your scene
Until the time you'd had enough.
You left your books for me to read
And the idea that what was broken
Could never be fixed.
You abandoned me.
I'm disgusted
I don't understand why your strength gave out
All you ever were was words and broken promises
You could speak the truth
But couldn't bear to live it.
I too can speak the truth
Or at least that truth which I can see
But I'll never give up my search.
I live the truth I speak;
I'm no hypocrite.
Not like you.
And when I fall
Which I'm certain I shall
I'll pick myself up and start again
I have the same kind of strength
You had in such abundance
Yet it ran out.
You chose sex, drugs, drink
I choose life.
