Inner Voice

I
have misplaced
my inner voice.
I
fear it may have been kidnapped
by the 4:30 dentist appointment
or by the phone calls
I keep forgetting to make;
Bullied
by the cryptic remarks
made to me yesterday;
Disengaged
by the fight
we are having right now.
Perhaps it has been trampled
by report card comments
and committee meetings
or muted
by trivial small talk
at going away parties
and vestal wedding showers;
Offended
by lousy television
and by the cheesy taste
of radio contests;
Drowned
by thousands of other voices:
try harder
back off
be yourself
stop procrastinating
don't let it bother you so much.
I
try hard to remember
where I left it.
On the hood of the car?
In the shopping cart
at the Superstore?
In the pocket
of my other coat?
or
did I just drop it somewhere?
I
grow suspicious
and impatient.
and
decide to wait
for the ransom note.

o.k. while i realize this was to be in the humourous poem category, it provided a catalyst for a good cry. how perfectly you captured the chaos of the spirit and the anxiety that misplacing your inner voice causes. perhaps i'm too close. i love this poem. it clarified a whole lotta stuff. i love how you write. |

Very nice touch at the end..it speaks volumes about those notorious inner voice kidnappers known as the the "Mundane Everday Gang".
I am just as fascinated by what delivers the inner voice back to us, though. Without it, my pen is empty.
