Ode to Beautiful Montana

Contributed by girltranscended on Saturday, 20th November 2004 @ 11:47:31 PM in AEST
Topic: NaturePoetry

Oh Mother,
I have never known beauty like this.
I have never trod upon virgin ground.
Never been held in by mountains.
Never have glimpsed Heaven, until now.

Oh beautiful Montana,
seeing you for the first time, I am awe struck,
suspended.
Ten minutes here and already the grandeur of it all
has taken in my soul like a beaten stray cat.

For here is my first real taste of the sweet,
creamy milk of ecstasy.
My first bath of rapture in which I grow,
unrestrained,
like tall weeds in your Big Sky sun.

Within me I detect dormant seeds,
suddenly sprouting to life.
Bursting forth inside my belly.
An inexplicable lull washes over my open mouth.
I am grasping for words that might never be
worthy enough.

I must move here.
If I am ever to harbor a heart that breeds happiness and inspiration,
I must believe that it could only be spawned here.
If anything is to become of me, this will be my home.

Oh beautiful homeland,
wilderness has begun to pulse through my veins
like a stampede of frightened cattle.
It has begun to beat inside a thousand drums
with the steady, deliberate rhythm of lapping waves.

I feel I have found a haven,
stumbled upon the last hidden hut
of a fleeting society.
My chance to attain the gilded light.

Ode to beautiful Montana,
I am coming home.

***But alas, with five years of study, what drew me there began to fade. Toxic dioxin hung in the Missoula valley. Ranchers ruled. Deer and elk were fenced from water, for the highway is king. Grizzlies were killed for doing what evolution mandates for survival. Mines gained entry and degraded habitat. Superfund sites lurked unseen. Oh, and the building... suburbia was superfluous. Go there while you can. See Glacier and Yellowstone. Take in the National Bison range. But don't kid yourself, you will soon learn.***

As I see it, sis - the beauty extends from inside out and not the other way around. This is very much another example of that.

Honestly, I read this with mixed emotions. Part of me wishes that it could have been everything you'd hoped it to be... but if it were, we wouldn't have you nearby - and that, of course, I couldn't/wouldn't wish. I do love this poem though -- it let's me see Montana as you first did.

Good thing you skipped Butte.
I guess.

What a tribute to Montana and first inspirations!
Its a shame you couldn't hold on to it, but oh the memory of that magic moment....!
