All I see are placid waters all around me. The sea is abnormally calm. There are no waves. There is no wind. The endless aqua-scape I see is like ice, motionless and shimmering. So calm that the clouds up above are reflected upon its surface. Both sky and sea look perfectly symmetrical like looking into an immaculate glass mirror. It’s as if I’m staring into two identical dimensions with me in between, watching and waiting for one to shine brighter then the other. I sit on an island, circular and small less then a quarter of a mile wide and just as long. There are no trees nor birds living in this place. The only things here are the blades of blue grass growing from the fine grains of black sand.
I came here by boat; a rickety wooden thing; a vessel that’s seen many journeys to be sure. Many wizened and old have traveled aboard its planks seeking out the mysteries of the world. It’s seen so much yet there is still much to be seen. It need not be docked or tied to the shore as these seas are so calm that it will not float away and I imagine the old ship prefers it that way. To be left untethered and free. Free to leave seeking out new adventurers that would brave its company on the road ahead like it sought out me.
It came one moonlit night on a lonely beach in the midst of Winter’s Eve. The moment I saw it I knew that it had come to take me away. Inscribed on the hull were the words ‘Wandering Star’. I no sooner read them then did I see an elderly man standing in the snow. He wore tattered clothes but did not appear to freeze. He looked peaceful and warm defying the frigid breeze. He must’ve arrived upon the vessel I saw because he kindly motioned for me to board this oddly fashioned ship. That night I left, set a sail aboard that boat and drifted away out into the sea.
This island I’m sure I’ve never seen nor heard of in dreams, but I know that it marks the entrance to a world set apart from our own; a place of strange and secret ways that has existed parallel to our own. Since the first rising sun it has been. Where the wandering and noble are taken to learn ancient magic and live in peace. A place where all rules are backwards and nothing is as it seems. And so I am here on this isle waiting for my boat to leave. Sitting here in this magnificent expanse for once in my life enjoying the wait one final look at the world I’m leaving behind. Before the final stretch of waters is crossed before I see what was said to be lost
