Wingless Bird

I see you standing there
On the street corner.
Your head pointed toward the sky.
Your eyes are so clear
Bright transparent windows.
I know what your are thinking
If you had wings, you could fly
Far away from us all.
You could leave this hellhole
And be part of the sky again.
Even though it has been so long
Since we plucked you from the sky
And ripped your wings off your back
You still remember the sky
And the wind lifting you higher.
You will never forget those things.
But we cannot let you leave.
Not after this long.
You are my wingless bird now.
My pet kept in a cage
That keeps trying to fly away.
You are mine now.
Not one of the sky and the clouds
You belong in the cage by my bed
Not flying through the air as fast as you can.
You will never go back to the sky now.
