Reverse the Storm

She has the deadly glare and the secret in her pocket
She is the one they call every now and then to reverse the storm.
"A killer hurricane is on the way," they say,
They hide us under metal desks and chains.
We sing "Silent Night, Holy Night" and huddle and pray to whatever we feel fit.
Windy night, fearful night, we're in love, the candle is bright.
Figures in ponchos push her out the door, and grasp eachother, crying,
"Girl! Reverse the storm! Reverse the storm!"
A wild wind whips our heads away from windows, as we bellow,
"All is calm, All is bright" and we pull blankets around our shoulders.
Dripping figures fumble radios till they transmit:
"A killer hurricane is on the way," they say.
They hide us under metal desks and chains.
Heartbeats race candle flames shuddering in the wind, and
Paper flies like fruit flies before our terrified eyes.
Frightened figures rush outside and scream above the loudness,
"Girl! Reverse the storm! Reverse the storm!"
At four o'clock the bells chime then crack, and
We notice how still it has become, so catiously, we stand up,
Smell the burning air, brush back our dripping hair
Acknowledge the fact that we never noticed the killer hurricane had ended.
The teachers say,
"What happened to the metal desks and chains?"
The children are still singing.
"Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace."

Wow... this poem's imagery is very strong. This memory must be vivid-- you certainly wrote like it just happened. Nice job! |
