He lay on the floor
As cold as a grave
And knew there would be no point
In getting back up again
What was actually above his head
Was the small kitchen light
That was whithered and dusty and old
But what he saw inside
Was his mother drinking
Like she did every night
And it made him want to cry
That she was simply drinking
As he was about to die
She probably wouldn’t even set down that bottle
If she saw him there on the floor
The alcohol was too precious to her
No matter what she denied
He cried to her so many times
About how it hurt him so
But she just took offense
And told him about his faults
not being able to see
That he would have saved her
If she would have listened to him
But ofcourse she couldn’t walk in
To see him lying cold
Because how could she reach him
From her grave at the church?
He thought he heard music playing
And it made him recall a song
About things from the past and souls floating on
But there’s no floating away
From the edge of death
And death felt as heavy on his heart
As a person sitting on his chest
Maybe there was an angel there
Telling him it was time to go
And maybe that explained the song
Cause it only made sense to him
For the music to follow the angels
He recalled a memory
Of the girl that he loved
And how she loved him a lot shorter of time
Then the long amount of time she said
“lets just be friends”
he changed so much for her
to get her back
but she didn’t care
and he never really got over that
he hoped she would hear about his death
and feel sorry for turning him down
then he thought of his father
and was surprised that he was still able to cry
at the last five minutes of his life
and he thought of all the things he did
that he wanted to take back
and how his father just didn’t want to believe it
that his son did so many things wrong
but now it was too late
he couldn’t say he was sorry
couldn’t give back the 100’s of dollars he stole
for drugs (all of which was killing him now)
he couldn’t tell his dad he did love him
even thought he never responded before
when his dad said, ‘I love you’
he prayed for his dad to walk in
to come home early from work
so he could tell his dad how he felt
but he listened for the sound of the garage
and heard nothing at all
and now he felt his heart slow its pace
till it was almost at a halt
and just before his vision went blank
he thought he faintly hear the words
“It’s time to go, child.”
And he was gone.
