We all do it,
everyones guilty.
Figuring out what to wear,
how our hair looks,
worrying what everyone thinks.
We all do it,
everyones guilty.
Theres hungry kids,
begging for food,
not knowing if they will live another day.
People murdered,
abused and mistreated,
Sitting out in the cold,
without even a jacket.
And while all this is going on,
We're sitting here,
wrapped up in ourselves.
We all do it,
everyones guilty.

I do it. I have obsessive compulsive disorder when it come to my looks. I won't even go to the grocery store unless I spend an hour getting ready first. Why? Because ito todays society image is everything. People base their perception of you by the way you look. Yes, it is shallow, but that is the cold hard truth. I am sorry for those starving children, but I am no God, it is not my resposibility to save everyone and I do not feel guilty about spending my money on make up and hairspray. Good poem though. Holds much truth. |

I wrote this in 2002 and won the award for best new poet of the year..its along the same theme..
I wonder
I’m self-involved and superficial.
I worry about things like my looks
that seem to be deteriorating
at a rapid pace.
I worry that someone
won’t like me
so I try hard
to please everyone
which is impossible.
I worry that I’m too fat.
Then I watch the news.
The faces that I see are beautiful.
They are dark and un-lined.
Noses small and perky
Some of the eyes are dark,
some light, but all seem large.
They are the eyes of children.
There is no light behind the eyes.
They look beyond us at something we can’t see.
They see the devastation
of terrorism and war.
Their homes have been destroyed.
Parents ripped away and gone forever.
Some are injured beyond repair,
without water or food to help them mend.
Here I sit, watching television
in my comfortable home.
A diet-pepsi in my hand
so I don’t put on weight.
Incongruity at its height.
Where is the equality?
Will they recover? Will I recover?
Will I someday learn
to look beyond myself
and focus on the plight
of the world?
I wonder.
