Lifted From The Page

selfstruggles

Daddy first birthed the mute (she won’t call him that anymore)
He took the words from her lips and he flung them to the floor
“Yellow” was the first to go (but yellow, she never knew)
She lost her red and orange and green, she broke when he threw blue
Colors bled out of the rainbow (everything went black and white)
She existed, colorless, in those days, hope sank into the night
For little ones do what they’re told (and mirror their parents’ way)
Though the thoughts danced about, not one would she dare say
Silent, she had learned to live (if one could even call it that)
In a quiet world all her own, word shadows at least would last
Speaking not of rainbows true (on the page alone they’d stay)
She found a way to make them real, she made them all in grey
Others came and finally went (never close enough to know)
Once or twice she shared a rainbow but stayed hopeless even so
Then she whispered a rainbow dream (just loud enough to be heard)
And someone told her that it seemed blue and gave her back a word
And “Blue”, it seems, was just enough (to help her to begin)
To lift the words up off the page and learn to speak again
Added Later: I thought maybe I should clarify... This, to me, was a positive write... a personal celebration of sorts and, more importantly, a thank you to those that have helped me move forward. It is, really, the title and the ending that bear the greatest significance - that is to say, my focus was on the present, not the past... the past was included really to put the write in context. And, for the record I guess... I was not the victim of child abuse, not physical abuse... that is not to say this piece has been completely misinterpreted, but in that sense I guess, it may have. Thanks ~SNM~

One very greatfull site member, that color has returned to your vocabulary, and that your words have begun to fly free of the page. Let the dream continue, for if you let them, dreams will come true ...
Wishing many more to come your way and all of them filled with promise and joy !!!!
Beautifully written !!! I loved it !!

I can't help but wonder if this was written in relation to what we were discussing earlier. It certainly seems so. It's a well-done and insightful explanation of that turn of events, which is different for each of us. I think I like the part about the blue best. We all must begin somewhere.

This seems to me to be about a bad childhood, where the child was abused in many ways. I could be all wrong( wouldnt be the first time), but thats what I got out of this. A begining of healing at the end. In any case, it was a spellbinding write my friend that left me with a sad, sad feeling.

If I understand the poem, it seems it is the expression of a woman sharing a little girls pain, suffering and abuse. The colors the expression of a brused body and torment she suffered. Perhaps internalizing her terror down deep inside until she reached a stage of being older and wiser and Silent-No-More!
Perhaps now she can deal with the whole rainbow....
A courages and beautiful write

I've read it and reread it several times now. It gets sadder and deeper with every read. It reads beautifully ~ I don't know what you'd change (or want to).

Like the sun coming out from behind the clouds after a raim storm producing a wonderful magnificant double rainbow.....
....the whole land lights up, the air smells new and fresh and the world is full of color once again.
In your case I beleive the color has always been inside you, whatever is happening in your life, I for one, an admirer of your work, am glad to see the colors are finally coming out. |

Extremely beautiful, and very deep, an awesome way of descibing life, the way you used colours to show emotions, so beautifully done. |
